As part of a major data center upgrade, food and agribusiness conglomerate J.R. Simplot created a green data center based on data center energy efficiency standards -- including PUE (Power Usage Effectiveness), DCIE (Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency) and RCI (Rack Cooling Index). The data center upgrade project also involved increasing rack density and transitioning from 120 to 240 volts AC power for greater power efficiency and to provide more power to the racks.
"Our upgraded data center has resulted in increased electrical efficiencies, overall redundancy and visibility to power and environmental details that lets us know how our data center is performing," said Jo McCarthy, IT Enterprise Architect at J.R. Simplot. "As a result, we are on track to reducing 25 percent of our energy consumption, calculated by total energy per unit of production.
The Uptime Institute’s 2010 Green Enterprise IT Awards were cosponsored by Jones Lang LaSalle and New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). Applications for the Awards were evaluated by an independent panel of expert judges selected by the Institute.
